Why use cedar for your deck

Here at Outdoor Environments we use a number of building materials from composite to wood when building decks. One of our favorite materials is natural cedar, which has long been praised for its durability, strength and beauty.  Cedar is resistant to decay and insect damage and ages gracefully. Its beautiful texture and color complement any architectural style and is a great return on your investment.  We also love its sustainability. Cedar doesn’t require treatment with toxic chemicals since it is naturally resistant to the elements. Its own natural preservatives allow the wood to be protected even in the harshest of winters. Wood is also a great option for those in the warmer climate since it is a natural insulator keeping the surface cool.

Trends from 2010 International Builders Show

The motto of Las Vegas may be, ‘What happens here, stays here’, but we’ve opted to break that hard-and-fast rule to share a few insights from the International Builders Show (IBS), taking place in Sin City this week below.

Green is still king, as sustainability stays on the forefront of professional home builders’ minds. Environmentally-friendly products remain the stars of this year’s show. But there are a handful of green products–according to Wall Street Journal columnist June Fletcher–that have failed to catch on, despite their advantages, including spray-foam insulation, isolated concrete forms (ICF’s) and solar shingles. For further details, check out Fletcher’s piece, “Green (Again)“.

According to a top economist at the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB), the recession is over, home values are stabilizing, and the housing market is expected to plateau. As a result, many homeowners are opting to stay put, and implementing strategic upgrades. From a stone-hearth oven with open flames similar to one found at pizza restaurants to residential elevators with cherrywood trim and motorized revolving shelves, these products are hoping to grab the attention of the cranky consumer.
