When the Porch Meets the Sun

Screened in porches can be tricky to design. That’s because they walk a fine line between interior and exterior. Not only do these outdoor rooms expose themselves to nature’s fury, they are expected to be just as cozy and inviting as a living room. Not only are porches supposed to protect you from insects, heat and cold, it should also keep you warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm. As contradictory as it may sound, porches are the only types of rooms that can achieve these conflicting results.

Many factors must be considered before the perfect porch can be added onto a home. Topography, existing vegetation, layout and proximity to roadways are some of the first issues that must be tackled. Then, the porch must be positioned in such a way that the rising and setting of the sun hits at just the right angle. Some porches can even be detached. Either way, porch building and designing takes much planning. According to Qualified Remodeler,

The sun travels in predictable paths throughout the day and, in turn, the seasons. Given this predictability, a design can be achieved to bring in or protect from the sun, depending on the desired outcome. Sunlight early or late in the day is low, whatever the season, while the angles of the sun at midday vary dramatically during the course of the year. In latitudes away from the equator, winter sun comes in low at noon, whereas summer sun is nearly directly overhead. With attention to roof overhangs, the midday sun can be blocked or allowed in as desired. Morning and afternoon sun can be blocked, as well, with solid or movable means. The dependability of the sun’s movement is relatively easy to accommodate with considerate design.

Maximizing Your Outdoor Room View

Most people think that plants, flowers, gardens and beautiful landscapes are natural wonders that can only be enjoyed from outside. However, no homeowner should ever underestimate the beauty of Mother Nature from inside. Have you ever noticed that with the right room addition, like a seasonal sunroom or screened porch, you can easily enjoy a spectacular view of your garden from inside? Here is a couple ideas for you to keep in mind:

  • Plan your outdoor landscape from inside instead of from outside. You’ll have a better view of what areas can andcannot be seen from inside.
  • Strategically place colorful trees, plants, shrubs and flowers where they can be seen from inside your outdoor room.
  • When decorating your outdoor room, take into consideration the colors that appear in your outdoor landscape.
  • One of the best design tips here is to keep your outdoor room neutral in color, that way the bright shades outside will pop even more.

Screened-In Porches

What are the most important considerations to take into account when designing a screened-in porch? When we look at this image, one of our most recent projects, we’re tempted to say “Comfort,” but the truth is, that is up to the homeowner.

Outdoor Environments’ responsibility comes into play at the very beginning–in the planning stages and in the consult with homeowners. Here are a few preliminary things we suggest they keep in mind:

* Space limitations. Will a screened-in porch take the place of a more functional deck? For those who enjoy reading a book outside on a nice spring day, gardening, entertaining, or grilling, will a screened-in porch leave enough room for your family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors?

As you’ll see below, when space is no object, Outdoor Environments likes to design screened-in porches as well as decks for ancillary usage.

* Keeping the addition consistent with the design and aesthetic of the home. The roof line of your home and the height of its rear windows and doors are also a big factor when adding on a screened-in porch, as this will determine how best to integrate the two.
