When you’re designing your landscape, don’t neglect the stairs. A good stairway provides safe, reliable access and can add to your structure’s visual appeal. The first step to designing your outdoor stairs is choosing the material with which to build them, and the material you choose will depend upon both aesthetic preference and the amount of upkeep you feel your family can handle.
Wood
Wood is among the most beautiful of natural materials, and if you choose wisely, it can also be sustainable. Wood will, however, need maintaining over time. If you don’t keep up with your wood stairs, they can start showing signs of wear and tear before their time.
Natural Stone
If you like the natural look, consider stone. Stone steps blend well with landscaping and usually require only an occasional hosing off to keep them clean. You can also take elements from your steps and incorporate them into your landscaping.
Brick
Brick is another good choice if you like the natural look. Less expensive than stone, it still has a rustic appeal that works well for established landscaping and old-world-inspired designs. It also requires little work to maintain.
