We’ve talked a little about the upper deck in our post earlier this week and now we wanted to move downstairs (by way of the spiral staircase) to the lower level deck. The lower deck features a dry living space for the family to enjoy.

Earlier this summer we talked about an outdoor living space we were creating that featured a two level deck and patio. We completely transformed our client’s backyard into an oasis complete with a water feature and even an outdoor TV. The project was so extensive that we are breaking it up into three parts. The upper deck, the lower deck and the patio.

Labor Day usually signifies the end of summer for many Americans. You might think the time for lounging outdoors has come to an end as well, but for some it becomes even more enjoyable. No more pesky mosquitoes to interrupt your time outdoors and with cooler weather you aren’t rushing to head back indoors to avoid the heat. To help extend your outdoor living well into the fall try installing an outdoor fireplace or fire pit so you can keep warm during the colder months.

We love creating innovative outdoor spaces for our clients that exceeds their expectations.  Currently we are working on constructing a deck that when completed will be the perfect outdoor living space for our clients.  Below is a photo of the original deck.

The below photo is the removal of the original deck.  As you can see nothing remains of the original structure.

The photo below shows the concrete board underlayment for tile floor.  We made the upper deck tile flooring waterproof to protect the dry deck below.

The photo below lets you see the installation of the spiral staircase .  Yes, we added a spiral staircase to allow the homeowners easier access to the lower deck from their master bedroom.

The lower level dry deck will be equipped with can lighting, an overhand fan and a flat screen TV.  The columns and the outdoor cooking area will be dressed with stone.  Overlooking the deck from the front will be a full patio, water feature, sitting wall and firepit that will be accessed from the wide open front staircase.

When building a deck it is important to understand the process frame by frame.

Here at Outdoor Environments we love awakening a love of outdoor living in our clients.  Our passion for building and design are rooted in helping you unleash the beauty of your natural surroundings.  Below are some porches that we designed and built for our clients to help them create their own welcoming outdoor space.

What is your favorite memory of a cherished childhood porch?  Mine is of my grandmother rocking me to sleep on her porch that overlooked the Blue Ridge Mountains.

According to a recent survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), homeowners are still spending on outdoor living, but they are forgoing many of the bells and whistles (think sport courts, showers and outdoor TVs) in favor of focusing on the basics (dining and seating areas, grills, lighting, firepits and fireplaces).

Other outdoor living elements that ranked as popular for 2010, according to ASLA:

Installed seating such as benches, seatwalls, ledges, steps and boulders (90.6 percent)

Weatherized Outdoor Furniture (77 percent)

Counter Space (73.5 percent)

Decorative elements such as ornamental pools, waterfalls, grottos (86 percent)
